Very near to the Wildlife Society Camp, this has long been a lovely site – but has only recently been redeveloped into a working camp for visitors.
During 2003–4 Busanga Trails put up a brand new camp here, with three large rondavels with en-suite facilities. There’s also a dining-room/bar area, overlooking the rapids. It’s a good spot to either start or end your visit to the northern Kafue.
Kafwala is about an hour and a half’s drive from its parent lodge, Lufupa. This is a stunning location, with lots of wild date palms lining the banks of the river – lending a very lush, tropical air to the place.
Kafwala is usually visited as part of a small 8-day ‘circuit’ of Busanga Trails camps in northern Kafue. Note that the hippos and crocs in this area have not read the textbooks, and seem to be living happily in and around the fast-running water of the rapids – so don’t be tempted to take a cooling dip, however inviting the gently bubbling water looks.
